WHY JOIN JROTC

Contrary to popular belief, the purpose of JROTC is not to act as a recruiting service for the military. Our primary purpose is to fulfill the mission of JROTC: "To motivate young people to become better citizens." Toward that end, we encourage all of our cadets to complete high school before making any decision about serving in the military, entering into a civilian job or career field, or continuing their education.
Western Harnett has one of the most unique JROTC programs in the nation. Like most JROTC units, we have a Raider Team and a Drill Team, in both of which the opportunity for membership is available to all cadets. There is also an Honor Guard, which is open to all Advanced Cadets.
We have a Color Detachment. The Detachment is composed of color guards representing major times/events in America's military history. The cadets wear period uniforms, and carry flags and or weapons appropriate to the time concerned. The Color Detachment covers the French and Indian War, the War of the Revolution, the War of 1812, the War with Mexico, the War Between the States/American Civil War, the Spanish-American War, World War I, World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Bosnia, Desert Shield/Desert Storm, and the Global War on Terror as well as a six-person Joint Service Color Guard. The Color Detachment has participated in, and supported school and local events, as well as events across the state and in other states as well.
In short, Western Harnett's JROTC Program has a great deal to offer. Cadets learn teamwork, leadership, and responsibility while taking advantage of many opportunities to have fun and excel.
